Minecraft Name: Matberry (co-mayor of Sinder33, Dustcity & Cookietown) Suggestion: Right, okay, so, let's make something clear. There's lots of players that aren't from an English speaking country that play ECC, and they can speak an average English, maybe because their country has English on its curriculum, or maybe it's just because they know, just like myself, that being bilingual can be a very useful skill. You can move from learning one subject to the other. So, what am I suggesting, anyway? Well, firstly, I wanted to get the reader to acknowledge my point in the paragraph above. We've got lots of players that are from non-English countries, and we've got an ever-expanding community. I don't want to suggest something too immense, but moving from one project to the next can help us slowly appreciate those of other languages, if the need should be seen. However, all I am suggesting for the current time is another forum, known as the "Worldwide Languages Forum". Here, people can post in any language they want, in any context they want. They can talk about ECC, they can talk of what a certain thing means in another language, whatever. Maybe we can even allow them to talk off-topic. There'll be rules, of course. Nothing deemed as offensive, no personal insults, no windings, etc. All forum rules still apply: don't try and act in an intimidating manner, respect everyone, etc., but English is for once not the compulsory language. A sticky is needed, just to explain the rules (you could add in the sticky in a couple of languages too). Reason: How would this benefit ECC? Simple. Those who have a passion for languages can learn to speak other languages and can try and say a few words. Helping someone learn a new language gives you a sense of pride, joy, a sense of happiness. So a new forum could tighten the ECC community, and make everyone feel happier. Other Information: Feel free to reply, give your own opinions, etc. I can see some major drawbacks in adding such a forum, including intense moderation and possibly more insults, but I can also see the benefits. Link to this plugin: I'm afraid this suggestion mayn't need a plug in, sirs and madams. Thank you, and as always, you're indeed allowed to reply.
The question would be who could monitor this section for content? For those of us who haven't ventured far outside the realm of the English language, it would be incredibly difficult to keep things from getting out of hand.
As I say, that was one of the only flaws I could detect. Moderators who cannot speak fluently in any other language asides English would have particular problems in monitoring such content, and the bilingual forumers of the forum would be the only ones who can tell whether a user is abusing the rules set.
Actually, its pretty helpful if you're trying to get the Gist of what someone's saying. It's never perfect, but you can get a pretty close idea as to what they're talking about.
You could just do something with the forums where you can switch your client side language, so somebody could speak Hindi and we would see it as English. +1
Would be neat to have. And online translators do give you the general idea of what someone has said in another language. If not, I am sure most languages used in that kind of forum will be common - Spanish, French, Japanese? - and someone else who may be "trustworthy" can vouch or better translate. I suppose, there could be unofficial "mods". No new rank, no new perks, no new nothing. Just people noted privately as those that can be translators.
answer is simple. Many people on here are Bilingual (if I spelled that right XD), which means they can speak 2 languages. I can speak some Spanish, and I bet ECC is full of highly intelligent language speakers :3
Interesting idea. Of course, as was hinted at by MoofinK, an industry for translators could open up, and should someone that perhaps does not speak fluent English not understand a certain phrase, where Google Translate cannot help, the forums can be a good way for them to communicate what they want to say so that it can be translated in English. Thanks for the support guys, and Google translate is inaccurate thanks to all the different grammar within different languages. Easy to see if someone's used it.
well Im portuguese, and I speak a little of english. sometimes is very dificult to explain in english what I want to say but its not the end of the world I always find a way, and seeking a way to explain what I want in english is helping me alot improving my english. ho, and by the way, google translate is completely useless!!! try to translate from portuguese to english and you will understand why
This, this exactly is how I learned most of my English. The basics were taught at school, but I actually truly learned to use English when I started to speak English on the internet. Here's a little quote from when I first started on ECC, though my grammar wasn't exactly bad at this time, I didn't capitalize anything and my punctuation wasn't that great either. (It used to be way worse, before I joined ECC, but I can't find that anymore) Now, I speak English at a fairly high level, this is all because I kept talking English and I kept learning new things because people correct me on it, and I can see people say things differently. My point is, let people speak their own language and you're effectively slowing them down in learning the English language.
-1 This would be too hard to monitor and people will still find ways to bitch, whine and say extremely offensive things about other players.
