[Suggestion] 18+ Sister Server.

I too wish to engage in chat that isn't always rated pg. However, making a sister server specifically for this isn't exactly the best idea. That would split our users up and with the Rising project almost done people are going to have their hands full messing around with that.

 

Dont think you will need to worry about them anymore....

 

Regardless of what just happened, this topic shouldn't be derailed. If anyone else cares enough to argue this topic, they ought to have the chance as well.

 

I 100% agree. Personally, i am not 18. I think that a simple chat channel for users 18+ would be very nice. The only issue i see here is confirming your age.

The chat channel doesn't sound like such a bad idea, I'm not 18 but being from da hood, I sometimes don't like being restrained in my speech. It shouldn't separate users any more than donator chat does

 

I for one feel that there should be a channel that you have to apply for in which you have to be 18+ to join. There is an option to show your birthdate in your personal information. If you would want to apply to be added to the 18+ chat, you must be willing to show the age in your personal information. I know that a lot of users will end up lying about their age, but this is the internet and it will happen. I know it doesn't seem necessary, but quite frankly If you want to mature your chat up a bit, you currently have to use pm's. And you can't have a conversation with more than 1 person involved in a pm.

 

There's no way to verify if someone's actually 18 or older.
It's easy to pretend, not so easy to enforce.

 

Not a PG chat but rather a NC16 rule chat. No age confirmation just your own common sense

NC16 = No child under 16.

 

I say just have a... Mature channel for all users who could handle it. If it were programmable, I would suggest having a warning after you attempt to enter the chat asking if you are sure you want to enter and note that swearing and other 18+ subjects are allowed to be discussed here without complaints.

I suggest this because as many users know, I am very underaged. It's just that, I can handle swearing and all those other touchy subjects. My whole life I've been subjected to swearing and such, and I've even seen some very... adult movies. Just because you are 18 doesn't mean that you should be the only one able to chat about these subjects and vulgarity.

 

In the end, all I'd be happy with is a mature channel in which I can speak a little more loosely while playing the game. I would offer to start funding for a town chat dedicated for this, however I'm not to sure on how chat rules would apply and if any leniency would be allowed for it.

 

There would be way too many issues with a restricted channel or server (you cannot argue that it would not be restricted). Putting any age, age range, adult/mature concept, or what-have-you on a channel is restricting it... Especially if you need some sort of application, password, proof of age, etc - then it is very restricted.

We used to have forms of restrictions... Town channels with the town channel owner having ban/kick powers for the channel, town channels on Ventrilo..so on. For the most part, it never worked out. People hate being left out, and it causes a lot of drama and issues.

None of this even touches on the fact that many parents already complain about language they see in our current channels and forum. If there was any type of mature channel, and anyone not of age joined it and saw a bunch of curses and mature chat, and then was caught by their parent? Many parents won't care that it's their "child's responsibility"; they will go right to complaining, either privately to Staff/Andrew, or loudly on the forum or in-game. (Not all will do this, but some will.)

It isn't a matter of someone being "mature, but young" or "young but swears and is fine with swears"... The point of a mature/age-set channel is to keep it to that. As well, just because someone is fine with the things said, or is often around them in real life, does not mean they should be exposed to it. And, unfortunately, it's far too difficult to control the users or confirm age without some form of real life identification.

As much as I would love a place to chat with users closer to my age and get away from the rampant hormones of our userbase, it would cause too many problems ... or maybe even be a dead channel. Because of this, I just use platforms like Skype to chat with users closer to my age and/more maturity. Sometimes I will even use IRC.

I don't see a need for this. People can easily lie and then we end up with just another server filled with kids. Plus an additional server would be expensive to run. Its sorta silly to be honest to expect us to make an entire server filed with adults. There are so few adults and to top it off the staff would need to double in size. We would technically not be able to have some of our younger staff even go over there and a good portion of our older staff are the higher ranking members. This would mean that our older staff would need to be on both servers and that would cause problems. If you want to chat about adult things, use Skype.

 

One problem, what if someone pulls off a wc.

Just because you are eighteen doesn't mean you should be able to swear. The rule shouldn't just be there because of younger ones, it should also (imo) be there so we have a more civilized server. Can't you really control cussing?

Having a mature channel doesn't mean just allowing swearing. There are plenty of topics the server doesn't allow that can be discussed in a civilized manner. Also, I don't agree with the fact that you say 18+ year olds shouldn't swear. If you are 18+, you are an adult and can say what you want. Granted these are my personal opinions, but I can guarantee that I'm not the only one to think this.
