I am a bit dopey when it comes to new stuff and it scares me I may lose what I have accumulated if I get something wrong. I have read the instructions and watched some videos but still not sure of a few points before I go ahead and create an island. Here are my questions: 1. Do you die when you fall off and is that it? you lose your island? or do you re-spawn? 2. Do you lose inventory when you fall off? 3. How does having water falling off the edge help in this instance? 4. Do you need to 'sethome 'once on the island? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.
1. Yes you die. No you don't lose your island. Yes you re-spawn 2. Yes 3. You can fall into the water, and then swim up the water stream back to your island 4. No, but you can. /is sethome
I'll add to that the fact that the water stream ends abruptly below level 0 (as I discovered at my expense*): therefore, if you can't manage to catch the water stream before you get lower than 0, you're doomed to quickly die in the void. This doesn't mean that falling water isn't a life saver, it actually is; just be aware of this detail and be quick. My advice is to start building a 220x220 cobble platform at Y=2 (can't get lower) as soon as you get a decent cobble generator: this way, even if you still die due to fall damage, you'll be able to retrieve your stuff (and a small part of your xp) because it'll be waiting to be re-collected for a minute after your death before it de-spawns. Oh: when you build it, don't bring with you more than a stone sword, a stone pick, a few stacks of cobble and a small amount of food, because it's very likely you'll fall more than once simply because of lag glitches and obviously there's not much time to catch the water stream when you're already at Y=2. I'm level 300-ish and I'm still finishing to build it, btw. *retrospectively, knowing the game mechanics, it's pretty obvious, but intuitively one just doesn't expect it
