After a recent string of rather unsavory events, there's been a change of rules. I'm posting this here so that you're all informed, and so that there will be no excuse should this occur again in the future. Up until now there has been no rule covering player loans, nor any other player to player agreements. This is still the case. However, we do have multiple rules regarding scams. Thus the official stance on loans is as follows:

ECC staff does not handle loans, nor any other player-player agreements, insofar as they are not blatant scams.

As soon as you take out a loan with the explicit intent of scamming the other user, you are considered guilty of scamming. It doesn't matter that ECC does not have rules governing loans or that we do not enforce player-player agreements. We do not tolerate scamming, and loan scamming is still scamming. If you engage in this sort of behavior in the future, you will be banned and possibly fined.

You can find the original thread in which the rule change/clarification was outlined here:

Ideally you would create a thread in the For Sale / Wanted / Job Offers / Advertisements forum section in which both parties agree to terms. Additionally, screenshots are always an important form of evidence. Please note, however, that it is still your responsibility to find and conduct trades/loans with responsible players. We will only act on loan scamming if intent to scam can be proved. If you loan money to someone who is merely irresponsible and who is acting without malicious intent, we can do nothing.

What about selling your town and then demanding it back, as Andrewkm said is legal here viewtopic.php?f=11&t=25552&start=20 just scroll down to his post...

Also, what if you honestly can't pay back the loan?

Then you really have no business taking out a loan in the first place.

I cannot stress it enough people...

DO NOT GIVE OUT LOANS! NOT WORTH IT!
