People mostly went to player market areas such as colebex ect ect. Maybe we should have a player market directory like a board in spawn with warps listed or warp signs? but don't think we need a main market anymore.? I don't think a board in spawn is the way to go, but just leave it to the owner of the town/ shop owners in the town to self advertise. This is because the town is not going to be controlled by the server therefore it should not be placed in spawn. The town would be under complete control of the owner and they could completely shut it down if they wished- just a hassle down the line for the mods+ to deal with. But +1 for the rest.
An economy server without a player market... I get what you mean with this but honestly this seems like the kind of thing we ought to have even if just to say we have one. Would definitely need some changes and could probably just be a handful of rentable stalls somewhere in spawn... Given that we're reusing the old spawn, perhaps replace the old PvP/Food/Item Reclaim shops with a neat little mall area?
Not a bad idea actually idk maybe just have a small mall or something actually in spawn? with few stalls like you said.
/warp mcgland2 Edit: I think the main reason why the market died on old main because there just wasn't a need for most things anymore, the server was around for so long and there was just so many items and blocks. But also like you said the town shops/stores took over with the good deals an such so it shut down the main player market. I am gonna give it a +0 because it's kind of hard to decide. I personally think the market kinda slowed down when everyone got access to /warp. Before everyone had access to /warp it forced most people ( with out the feature) to actually shop for deals..
yeah ideally since we aren't that big I'd say 8-10 stalls, minimum rent, strict requirements. Require a certain amount of activity, trade signs, and give the staff appropriate leeway to deal with squatting. Just make sure the shops are full and somewhat active.

+1 I remember when my towns had thriving shopping districts. Would love to see that on the new server.
