This is the default description from essentials. /nick also has an administrative portion that allows admins to set the nickname of another user. Not a bug or a planned feature.
But... you use a private fork of Essentials and it's trivial to change it. It takes literally no effort whatsoever. Even andrew can do it. And there aren't any negative repercussions for doing so. Because you guys are the only people using the custom fork.
