Several new users NEVER read the rules. Even when they apply. Why? Simply because they aren't forced to. They can completely lie in their application for resident etc. I want the rules to be either something like a quiz or a path you have to follow or even just making them more noticeable. I think i speak for all mods when I say new players constantly ask questions they could easily find in the rules. Mods may not mind it but i'm sure it can get tedious after a while. Whether it is because they can't see them, don't want to, or simply don't care about rules i don't know.

    Why am i doing this?
Because constantly users don't know the rules and therefore can't abide by them or ask questions answered in the rules. This could also cut down on bans and or excuses saying they didn't know it was against the rules. I have promoted one idea similar but it is now obsolete.

    FAQ
How do you know that people don't read the rules?
They ask questions that can be answered in the rules if they read them

How do you know it can get tedious?
I don't but from my little bit of answering i'm guessing a hour or so of that can be preeeeeety boring.

With book and quill maybe andrew could write a rule book that cannot be sold, nor will be cleared with /clearinventory. Every new player spawns with it. I think there is a plugin for spawn kits.

I would like to second the option of having them go through a little maze when they first join ECC. I think I would promote more pros then cons:

    Pros:
Players would be more aware of rules.
They would have to read to answer the question correctly.
It would help the mods get more work done other then answering questions that can simply be answered in the rules.

    Cons:
May not bring in as many players considering they have to take the time to read.

Those are both good ideas... But I have been on other servers before I found this one and they had those kinds of mods such as a beginning kit or a maze but it seems like no matter where you go the people who break the rules know they break them whether they read it or not so maybe instead of focusing more on making them know them maybe you could raise more awarness as to what happens when you break a rule, So they are more pushed to do what they know is expected instead of breaking the rules...

im against the idea as of playing servers for over year and a half now people dont play servers that much were you spawn in a maze and takes 40 minutes to get it its annoying and will lose our customers

I have signs placed in my town and when people ask me where something is I tell them to read the signs. On more than one occasion has someone said "I dont read signs" Wtf? Signs are there to be read. *Effing* read them.

A simple maze that takes 1-2 minutes to get through would be nice.

Do you REALLY think EVERY SINGLE PLAYER is gonna read the rules? There is no way to actually enforce it, and andrew won't go and spend a day writing a rule book almost no one is going to read. Let them get banned. The mature ones might read it (i can name a lot) but most if the rules involve common sense. At least a ban will teach them to start reading the rules. Also about the book thing again... All it will do is cause a huuuuuuuge influx in books, being sold, scammed, and anything in between.I mean, tons upon tuns of mini drop parties of spawn RULE books. I'm also not sure if there is an item ID for a signed book and quill, which deems this sentence questionable.

Tutorial idea...it has been made before, and has been denied, by users though, because of obvious cheating. Follow one guy the whole time...boom, finished. EASY.

    End of rant :p

    EDIT:

It isn't just builders doing that, which is what I think you believe. I see PLENTY of Presidents asking questions stated in the rules. It's a mods job to answer questions, and without questions, it's ban. Ban. Kick. Ban.

You can't expect everyone to be perfect, because nobody is.

I never read the rules when I started playing this server. I simply just started building and trading. I just checked the rules once in a while before I did anything I suspected of being illegal. I never fully read the rules until I was Mayor. The rules are something that you learn as you go.

    But, in contrast...

Look at the Ban Appeals section of the forums. Only 5% of people there are asking for an appeal because they didn't read every single word of the rules (they should have just made sure what they were doing was legal). The other 95%? They have an IQ of less than 40. They are banned for griefing, scamming, raging, X-raying, etc. It's common sense not to do this, you don't need rules to explain.

I have been on a server before which used a 'maze' to explain the server rules.
I actually like the idea, and sooo often I think new players are overwhelmed with everything when they first log into the server that they are almost scared off by it. I remember myself feeling somewhat like that back when I first joined. If players were eased into the server through a starter island sort of thing, then spawn chat would likely be less of 'I can't build anywhere this server sucks' ect. ect. which i so often hear from players who obviously don't even know the wild exists.

Yes you could argue that some players don't like having to go through mazes to actually get into the server, but I think that as long as you make it long enough to explain the most important points but short enough to ensure that the player doesn't get bored, then it's worthwhile.

90% of the rules are common sense. The other 10% you should be able to figure out as you move along. The only important things newcomers need to know are where to buy a plot, where to buy materials, and how to make money. The rest will follow.
