Necro?

Necro isn't "ECC slang", it means don't bring up a thread that has been "dead" for a while. A few months or so.

 

Urban Dictionary: Necroing
Action to dig up a dead thread in a forum.
Why are you necroing this post ?! Look, it's already rotten !

 

As they said, its bringing a post back from the dead. After about a month or two, we consider new posts necro's.

Worst one's I've seen is people 'resurrecting' posts from the beginning of ECC...

 

There is an exact definition of "necro" now added on the ECC wiki. Considering you haven't read it since your last Application, it isn't expected that you know it yet. It also includes an exact time-table for how long you have until it is considered a necro.

 

Decided to go and get this for you to clear things up:

• There is to be no "necroing" of threads, which includes the following criteria:
  • Bumping a thread that has not been posted on in over 2 weeks, unless the content of the thread has become relevant to be opened for discussion again.
  • Bumping a thread that has not been posted on in over a week in order to flame, troll, or cause a problem.

 

I personally consider it to be a necro if the thread is off of the first page of the sub forum.

 

You mean why do people do it? Or why is it against the rules?

 

Well I'm going to go with the most simplistic answer. Everytime you post on a page that others have posted on, it alerts those people. For example: I don't just get an 'alert' I also get an email. So, if I quit and you were to go necro my old posts, you would be flooding my email.

Secondly, a lot of things change over time. It is always better to start a new post, where people who are active can participate instead of resurrecting an old post that bother tons of users who aren't around anymore.

 

the first paragraph is a user setting that revan turned on for some reason, that's not the case for most people.

But the main reason is, it's pointless, why necro a thread that's been dead for a long time when you have nothing relevant to post? It's quite annoying when people do it, as it mixes old posts that are no longer relevant in with the new posts.

 

Not everyone uses that function??

Not a flame war. A "Revan is baffled that no one else's use that function" war...

 

I use it for about half of the time.
I can see "most" people leaving it off.
I would also agree that not "everyone" uses it.
But that "no one" else uses it?
I do.


I always wondered why "necro'ing" was a faux pas as well.

 

I use the function only for forum posts, I have it disabled for private conversations.
