Rookie mistake... it's melon blocks not slices nub

 

If you look very closely, you can see that its not the way to get a melon sword.

 

It is. But u need 3 melon slices at the top not 8

 

Try using solid melons instead of slices. It takes up to 1000000 tries to get it to work so don't give up.

 

Actually, it's one stick and two melon blocks. DURRRRR
