I can confirm that the dirt on the ground was unable to be picked up, even with an empty inventory of mine.
I remember this as an uncommon side effect from auction testing (https://www.ecocitycraft.com/forum/threads/bug-auction-not-dropping-items.147092) a while ago. Sometimes only one player saw the dirt and I didn't, but I managed to achieve the result for me a few times back then.
@JamieSinn can you check this out. Also when you logged out and back in was the dirt still there? May have been client side. Best to always insure an empty inventory when bidding on auctions.
