hope i'm using contest right. ok in 1 of the contests that Andrewkm did, he said the answer was 14413. But... he didn't use the symbols in the right order. 84 + 89 x 84 - 124 + (89-84) is actually 7441. in mathmatical order it's 84 + (89 x84) -124 + (89-84). multiplication and division have to be done 1st i'm not asking for anything, but i love math so much that i married it. <3
i know, and i'm not asking for anything other than the recognition of the real answer. I just love math so much, that i think it deserves to b known. i'm not mad and i'm not jelous. the contests r fun.
1 Do any math inside grouping symbols first (parentheses, brackets & braces) 2 Evaluate numbers with exponents (Whole number exponents will be explained as part of 6th grade lessons. They are not included in this lesson, except to know the correct order.) 3 Multiplication or Division Multiplying and dividing have the same priority. When you are reading from left to right, do whichever one you come to first. Skip adding and subtracting until after all multiplication and division has been done. 4 Addition or Subtraction Adding and subtracting have the same priority. When you are reading from left to right, do whichever one you come to first.
The MDAS part in PEMDAS is actually wrong. Multiplications and Divisions should be done in order from left to right, not multiplications first. Same goes for subtraction and addition.
"Parentheses outrank exponents, which outrank multiplication and division (but multiplication and division are at the same rank), and these two outrank addition and subtraction (which are together on the bottom rank). When you have a bunch of operations of the same rank, you just operate from left to right."
What Gernen said is true, when two of these symbols are the same "rank" they are done in order of left --> right.
multiplication and division do go left to right, just like addition and subtraction, but (addition and subtraction) and ( multiplication and division) are on 2 different levels. u deal with the division and multiplication from left to right 1st. then u finish the rest from left to right. And yes, parentheses do outrank exponents, which outrank multiplication and division. but that wasn't what I was pointing out. Here is what it should look like... 84 + 89 x 84 - 124 + (89 - 84) 84 + 7476 - 124 + 5 7560 - 124 + 5 7436 + 5 7441
I love the phrase "I contest contest," but only if you declare it in a dramatic voice at the top of your lungs.
