How does one make money and when you first spawn, do you have like a start off money? (Sorry new here)
Welcome.. You do not get a starting balance of money, but you do have a starter kit (/kit starter) which gives you the basic tools and a bit of food if I recall to get you up and running. From the spawn, you can access the mining world, which is non-PVP to begin your hunt for materials, if you find yourself in an area which has been seriously mined, use the (/wild land) command to warp to a random location in the mining world. To start you can sell most your materials form hand to the server (/sell hand), however get to know the spawn markets, most pay a better price for your labored efforts. The community is helpful, if in doubt, ask by chat or msg any other player, specifically if you need a place to stay etc.
To add on to what Shark said, @toocoolj every day you get to vote for the server 3 times and with each vote you receive a nether star, which can be sold using '/sell hand' or you can sell to other players.
although i would suggest never ever selling them to the server. right now you could sell them for more than 400 dollars a piece. i might even be interested in buying them...
