So i've had this problem for a while now, and it's really pissing me off. Whenever i place a half-block or slab on the top part of the block, there is a chance it will snap down. Same goes for upside-down stair placement. You place a stair on the top part, bit of lag, snaps down, you fall, lose an 8.5k pickaxe to some douchebag. I'm not sure if this is anything the server can do about, since it seems to be the metadata of the world blocks resetting due to lag, but if it can be fixed, please. I'm dying all the time... This happens to me sometimes, I believe it is just a lag issue on the client end. However, I may be wrong.
Yea, i noticed it happens more often to always when clicking the bottom side of the half block... "It's not a bug, it's a feature..."
