I have just tested this, it is just a graphical glitch, the item is not really in your inventory. Try reloging and see if the item is still in your inventory.
I took a diamond pick but put it straight back in. I don't know if it really works. I was going to test it in the mining world, but I was worried that I would forget where the chest was. However, if you get the chest open the pick goes straight in without you doing anything so I think you're right about it being graphical.
Well I tried it and when I hit the floor with a taken out item the ground started breaking. I don't know if this means if it is actually in your inventory.
