Recently I have been looking around the forums and have meandered my way to the complaint section of the forums. What really scared me were the ban appeals. Some of the people who were appealing did not use correct grammar. I saw a post (not naming names) that all of his or her I's were not capitalized! It was almost like all of his years of going to school do not apply to his life. What we learn is school is part of our lives and whatever we are taught is what we should implement. I will also be covering how a lot of posters use colors that hurt the eyes or put the worst fonts in. I understand that some of us make mistakes, forgetting to use the right tense or use the right word. This is fine! WE all make mistakes. But forgetting to put a period or capitalize before a sentence to me is UNBEARABLE. I can not stand seeing ban appeals that have I's not capitalized or no capital letter at the beginning of every sentence. If you are going to take the time to get make a ban appeal, then you might as well check it over for sources of error. If you really care about the actions you make and care about the server, use proper grammar when doing ban appeals. I have decided to create a few things to remember when you want to write something on the forums because looking professional wins half the battle in life. So here are some rules of grammar that nobody should ever forget. If you have anything to add, please do. Rules:1. Always dot your I's and cross your T's.2. Keep the original font size and font family.2.a. You may use a different font for titles, subtitles, or role play.3. Remember to spell out numbers below twenty.4. Always follow the Ban Appeal format or any format for anything, it shows you care!5. Never bold something unless you are using emphasis.6. Read over your work twice! To me these rules are a way to keep posts looking professional and look appealing. Everyone makes mistakes! But the only thing that is bad is making lazy mistakes. It takes very little time to hold down the shift button to capitalize. Remember, if you really care what you are talking about, you are going to want to make sure that you are neat and tidy! If you do not know what a word means or need to spell a word, use a Dictionary! As always, -Dragon
Make sure you always stay on the ball with you writing. Use what you have been learning in school to show off who you really are.
i tink NAVYSEALS2000 has lot to contriboot. In all seriousness , Navy is by far the best at correcting people on their grammar.
Very well said. The only thing I do not completely agree on is: 3. Remember to spell out numbers below twenty. My main rule is, if spelling out a number in a sentence, then continue with that format and spell out the rest of the numbers. If using numerals, then continue to use numerals. I understand that for many formal papers that spelling the numbers out is preferred, but I also realize that internet forum etiquette is not the same as formal writing. While I agree with the points, I also understand that many of the younger players on ECC may not have had teachings regarding this yet. There may be also cultural and/or language barriers as well. I think it requires a meeting in the middle somewhere. We have to be more tolerant and take into account extenuating circumstances, and the players appealing need to slow down and take the time to make their appeals more "professional" (for lack of a better term). Basically just clean it up and make it look like they are serious about returning.
I'll be honest, though: It looks a lot more professional when you don't use multiple different colors such as you did in your original post. Colors convey meaning; multiple colors in a post is awkward for some people to read. In your case, you used some nice colors that aren't bright and blend fairly well together, but that doesn't stop people from associating colors with certain things and getting an odd vibe from your writing that you didn't mean to convey. There are always things you don't know about writing, which applies to me equally well. As much as I'd like to see everyone in this world writing nice and proper, I understand it's not fair to judge them on their ability to write, especially over the internet. I've learned to disregard improper writing when necessary. (I mean, I would never accept someone into anything professionally if they couldn't write proper, but I couldn't care less when it's improper in a random forum conversation.)
I would like to address the fact that by posting this forum, it is giving younger players or less illiterate people to learn techniques. Of course spelling numbers out is great, but I do know that Roman Numerals are most certainly fine. I'm glad you feel the same way as me!
Color may convey a certain meaning, but in my opinion it splices up the usually boring white letters always all on the screen. It also gives fun to what you say and if you only use the lighter colors for talking it can be a really good way to add some "fantabulous" (Not a real word but it describes how I feel on the topic. Many people make up words in books, like the word chortle. Chortle was made by the author of Alice in the Wonderland. It is basically a chuckle and a snort combined. This word is now considered a word in the dictionary!) color to words. If I wanted to make emphasis onto something I would use a darker color, like so, ...to put a period or capitalize before a sentence to me is UNBEARABLE. This also does not go against anyone's knowledge or skills in writing. It is simply a statement saying that we should basically put more time and effort into posting. The boat of grammar and professionalism gives wake to many great benefits! Color can also be a way to organize a paper, essay, etc. Thank you for commenting!
See I'm at a toss up here... On the forum I prefer to write things out nice and neat, rarely ever using color. However, pm me in game and its more like text messaging me. I don't feel as much emphasis on being proper. So in turn it doesn't really bug me when people write sloppy or whatever... I usually know what they mean. Sent from my NX008HD8G using Tapatalk
In the game I think you can go either way. You could either talk formally like I am doing so now. Or you could talk like this: "Oh nu! r u there? Wazup?" I certainly talk both ways because sometimes I have time to type what I want to say, other times I need to talk fast to warn someone that they are about to be attacked, etc. This could really go both ways and I am glad that you brought this comment to the table!
This. I'd reiterate what you've just said, but that's quite a bit. You finally put everything into words. Too many people don't have common sense, which this post is essentially saying. I'm sure this is also hinted within your post, but the correct usage of words. Not just any, but mostly homophones. "Your/you're" are my biggest pet peeves. The two words have nearly nothing in common. A short definition I go to: "Your" is possessive, "You're" is a contraction. Correcting someone, then seeing them still not know the difference gets annoying. I'd start with the "there/their/they're"'s, but there is too much to put. Thank you for taking the time to make this great post!
This is not really what I mean. I do not like how you say, "Too many people don't have common sense, which..." This is implying that every person who makes an error has no common sense. You may not have posted that knowing that people might interpret you this way, but I just want to make clear that all I am stating is an opinion. Thank you for your post!
