I'm thinking about opening a spawn shop once I get the funds, and I've been looking at the prices of items and how they have been fluctuating over the last little while and wonder; Will I make my 5k back in a week? Especially if it is underground even beside generaljoecools'? Also, would it be much more wise to contact a player about a side stair spawn shop and invest that much more money in, instead of going underground?

You could always give it a try for a week or a few weeks and then if it doesn't work out, give up the spawnshop

EDIT: The people below give much better advice; my point was that you're not totally "locked in", and it's worth giving it a shot even if it doesn't work out the first time.

Get ready to be called a copier, no matter how different your spawn shop is. People will always think you copied someone.

Well, Trev and I produce a Market Report that will let you know what items are sold, how many people sell them, and what the average sell price is. Not every item is sold, though, so having things no one else does might generate more traffic for you. Find your niche and fill it... you'd be surprised how much money is there.

I thought the same thing. I watched spawn shop prices for well over 4 months. You will make your monthly "rent" in netherstars alone. I make roughly about 20-30K each week. I also have some rarer and harder to find items I sell. you have to test out what sells and what doesn't. My tip to you is, slimeballs and endstone don't sell well.

Also, would it be smart to save up for something that is not located underground?

You should look at the residents+ thread that says when everything expires and then snipe it.

All you have to do is advertise your shop a lot. Doesn't matter where it is located as long as you can advertise it a lot, and it will help if you can tp people there as well.

The ones on top I would wait to get lots of money, then they are good. If you spend all your money on the shop, not as many people will come of you don't buy things. Not saying everything you sell, you have to buy at your shop. Lots of builders walk around looking if people will buy their items, like iron/diamond/gold/redstone/lapis to get money. And now that there are netherstars, people want some where to sell theirs for money. Selling exp at like 1.2k or less then other sell it, you can make lots off that fast, too.

I bought JBuks shop for 500K. It was totally worth it, since top floor gets visits the most.

I've had quite a few different spawn shops in my time on ECC. A lot of times I find it is hard to keep them in stock and that is what as caused me to sell them and give them to friends. So only buy one if you can keep it in stock.
A tip I have is the better location of your spawn shop the more you can charge for you items ;)
