I can see where he's getting at. Normally you shouldn't be able to get herbalism xp from self-placed items, but he has gone and become a sneaky ninja and found a bug that allows for quick and easy herbalism skills to rise up.
It's intentional, just like how you can do it with any other herb gaining item, it also applies for other mcmmo stats such as mining, woodcutting, excavation , ect
