ASauer it is really about what you want to do with it. Do you want to mine? The aether really isn't the best place for mining. Would you like build fantastic structures without the fear of grief? The aether is perfect for that. Andrew will rollback grief in the aether and all aether griefing is bannable.
When the aether would be reset, if you had fly, it was pretty easy to find ores under the islands. Nowadays you barely find any decent ores, mostly coal and iron.
