Suggestion [Downgrade]

The reason we upgraded was to allow the people on 1.7.2 to connect, doing this made the server numbers rise and you can see so many new players vote/donate/promote ECC

A lot of people have been having trouble connecting since we upgraded. I don't know if it is related or not though.

 

...it takes a user about 30 seconds to switch to 1.6.4. Users using 1.7.2 is hardly a good reason to update the server to a hacked protocol.

tl;dr: 1.7.2 only appears to be better (more users online and connecting), but in the long run, it isn't. Most of those new users just want 1.7 features, which we do not have at all. Most leave and don't come back - which is why our online users doesn't continually climb up. 1.7.2 only gets a few more eyes seeing the server, a few more users voting, and that's it. As well, there is no mod compatibility. Without mods, even more users leave - including the ones who actually play (although they will come back, this means that the server temporarily loses more users who contribute to the economy, donations, etc).

1.6.4 is stable, has mod compatibility, and EVERYONE can connect (1.7.2 protocol hack has connection issues) if they spend a minute to change their client version (Mojang made this very easy). There will be a steady amount of users online who will actually play and contribute to the economy, donations, etc.

The ONLY differences between 1.7.2 protocol hack and 1.6.4 is that 1.7.2 protocol hack is frustrating - it has no 1.7 features, prevents users from connecting, causes users to crash, and doesn't support mods (blame Mojang for making mod updating a female dog).

Pros of 1.7.2 hacked protocol: At least 3:
Periodic small increases of total users online;
periodic small vote increases;
periodic new users seeing the server.

Cons of 1.7.2 hacked protocol: At least 6:
Almost absolutely no mods;
tons of connection issues;
tons of crashing;
tons of frustration from the above;
users not getting on due to no mods, crashes, and inability to connect;
absolutely no 1.7 features whatsoever (new users join for these features - once they find they are not there, they leave and do not come back).

Pros of 1.6.4: At least 8:
Steady amount of users online, and still getting new users;
steady amount of votes;
stable connection (no crashes);
ability to connect without issue (excluding being on 1.7.2);
all mods are up-to-date and usable;
server is stable without 1.7 issues;
plugins are all working with this version (no conflictions with a protocol hack).

Cons of 1.6.4: At least 4:
Users on 1.7.2 cannot connect (but downgrading themselves takes 30 seconds);
a small decrease in total online users (because people are too lazy to downgrade or don't understand/spend time to Google how);
a small decrease in votes;
a small decrease in new users seeing the server.

 

This would be a bit pointless. Although the server hasnt yet got all the 1.7.2 features it still saves people (Including myself) to be playing in 1.7.2 and then having to quit minecraft. Open it. Change the Version. Log back in. Join ECC. Also, how many people are now actually still playing on 1.6.4? 1.7.2 has been out for ages and i think it was about time the server updated. With or without the features.

 

You seem to be forgetting the bad login everyone was getting.
Also, all this hype for 1.7.2 I know a lot of people really wanted to check it out. Yes, they can change back.

And really: How long is temporary? How long will we wait? You are making it seem like it wont take long at all to update to 1.7.2 and to be honest I have had no issues with the hacked protocol.

 

I don't think people will quit because there are no 1.7.2 features. No multiplayer server has these features yet (except for vanilla ones, or so i've heard). So, they can't just go somewhere else to be able to play multiplayer 1.7.2.

The increase in people online, new players and voting is worth so much, it can't be understated how valuable incremental increases are to these categories.
