Lag issues in specific places isn't easy to fix from what I've heard. D: If it is unbearably laggy for you, it could be on your end, not the server. Most people don't have much issue with the little lag spawn does have, so I'm doubting it's on the server end. How old is your computer? If it is older, I would try to run as few programs as you can, and change your in-game settings so Minecraft isn't straining quite as much. Getting the OptiFine mod may (or may not) help greatly, too, if you want to download it.
There is no real way to fix this as there are a .... bajillion reasons as to why it's happening, so unfortunately, unless Andrewkm re-does spawn or you get a shiny new computer, nothing will be changed. It's just the lag of portals, lava, water, slow computer, etc. that combines to make it bad. If I were you I would get something like OptiFine (like Moofink said) or Spout craft client to improve your Minecraft experience. Little things like switching to fast graphics, short render distance, no sound, etc. will make it easier to survive as well.
your best choice would be to install optifine (you can disable portal animation and particles and stuff with it) and you overall fps would go up, irregular FPS will be fixed and a lot more.
