Hey guys, A couple weeks ago I was reviewing this suggestion: oooh, fancy suggestion and I noticed that one thing seemed to be in agreement, myself included. Our current server blockshop is the weakest link of the new spawn. I honestly agree. Its a pain to navigate, its unorganized and its impossible to find anything easily. I decided to build a prototype blockshop redesign thing, whatever. Anyway, its done and what remains is for you guys to check it out and let me know what you think. I also appreciate if you answer the poll as well. Here's a screenshot of it from the entrance, but you can go visit the actual build yourself at /warp newblockshop We'll leave this up for a few days so you guys have a chance to view, wander it and let me know what you think.
I like it better than the old one but there's too many sea lanterns. Let's be real here though who actually buys from the block shop these days lmao Still a better design though, I'd implement that.
Better, yes. However its still not good. In my opinion has opposite problem, too claustrophobic that way. Need stuff grouped together but also need room to move and see where everything is. In my opinion the previous spawn's shops were good, like things near each other, easy to navigate with or without fly.
Right things are way cheaper when buying from a player but it saves a lot of time just to go there and buy it for a slightly higher price rather than advertise for 10 min hoping for a player to sell something to you
Good point. But then, I voted in favor of that suggestion ... and I built the current one. Logging on now to check it out.
In my opinion, there are a tad too many lanterns and the entire area feels a little crammed together. I understand the entire purpose of the new shop is to make things easier to get to, but i feel this is the wrong approach to doing it
What a nice build. I like it. No doubt everyone else already noticed that it's designed to fit into the existing space. I would not change any of the fundamentals of the build, or anything about its style. It's a beautiful build, and it solves neatly the main issues with the present one ... which, if I may remind everyone, was a placeholder that never got replaced due to lack of time left in the competition. I would suggest a few improvements, but not much. I think it's a great build and very functional. 1. I agree that it is a little tight along the main aisle, but my impression is that widening the aisle might alter the proportions of the main "nave" badly. If it would, I wouldn't change that. If it can be pushed out on each side a few blocks, and the center aisle widened, I think that issue would go away. I forget how many empty blocks there are between the existing wall of the shop and the staircase from the square. I suspect there is space to work with there, if the current build is exactly as wide as the existing shop. Remember, all unused spaces in the spawn build are filled with ordinary grey stone, which does not appear anywhere else in the build, except for one surface area in the main square. If you would be removing ordinary grey stone, you are not removing part of the design. Which was intentional for moments just like this -- I knew the build would likely be altered over time, so I did that to make alteration easier. 2. I agree that the sea lanterns are a little overpowering, but I suspect that Clar already knows that and already has a plan about that. It's a lot easier to lay down rows of things when you're building a prototype. I'll bet she already intended to break up the sea lanterns. But the light is important in an underground shop -- you can't get rid of too many of them, and it might not be possible to get the lanterns exactly right without putting the build into the spawn and perfecting it. 3. I would bridge the gaps on the third level, the same as the second level. I think players won't find the stairs to the back end of 3. I suspect she took those out on purpose and that it looks better this way, but in this instance, I think form follows function. 4. I would add upside-down stair blocks to the exposed underside of the quartz staircases. Less blocky than the current appearance, but maybe that's just my preference. All in all, + 1 from the guy whose build you would be replacing.
I went on and counted. I believe there are three blocks of dead space to work with between the existing wall of the shop, and the existing wall-construct of the staircase -- it would be four, but the lights in the stairwell are recessed into the wall. So the Clar-build could be widened six blocks total at the center, three on each side, and still fit into the existing space. I don't have spawn perms any more, so someone with perms would want to dig into that wall and check ... but I think that's right. @ClarinetPhoenix
The layout is 100 times better than the current one however the design I would personally improve in some parts, using different blocks and fixing the proportions slightly for starters, either way we need a new server shop for sure but need to ensure that it's not rushed to be changed just to be changed again down the line.
Changes Today: -I shifted each side of the build 2 blocks over making the center path now 4 blocks wider. This does seem to improve the "cluttered" feel immensely. -I've taken out like 70% of the sealamps and have opted for some ceiling "strip lights" on each floor to light up the areas inside the actual shops. The color shop is currently the only shop with a top floor, for that floor since its taller I've done more like "hanging lanterns". -The center path is no longer solid sealamps -I added bridges on the top level as well. Which proportions do you feel needed looking at? What block theme would you suggest? Again you guys can visit via /warp testing or /warp newblockshop
Similar thought to jmichs suggestions, just checked it out now, 100 percent love the improvements of the size/design of the path and the bridges. What is your plan for above the arches since there is nothing currently stopping you flying out and there's still plenty of room before spawn floor/roof (I understand this is just testing), also is there any point in having the light holes in the spawn floor as I personally don't think they will suit the new block shop design. Looking at this if you try and implement them into the design in my opinion I don't think this will flow with the arches so if they are implemented then I think you should slightly move the light holes around to fit in between each arch I guess.
I agree with the observations about the changes from all sides. This is a quality build. With respect to DD's point, the light wells could easily be removed from the floor of the main square. If you fly up from the center and look down, you can see that the (rigidly symmetrical on two axes) design is actually thrown off by the light wells. Again, the shop was going to be removed and redesigned until I ran out of time. Note the "arms" embedded in the floor, extending out from the ECC in the center to each of the six existing portals. The arch into SG and the arch where the stair down to the shop was should be exactly across from the portals on the far side of the square. The "street" in the center axis of the floor could be extended exactly as it is on the other side of the square, and "arms" extending out to the SG and Shop arches could be added, the "street" and the "arms" all being parallel to each other. The rest of the floor could then be filled in with the cross-hatched bone blocks like the rest of the floor. Simple! Although I don't know what color you would make the glass in the two arms ... white or light grey, I suppose, since I already used the six primary shades in the rainbow on the other six portals. At any rate, if it was decided to fill in the light wells, I would be happy to log on and do the floor. It would only take me ten minutes if I had the supplies. It wouldn't take a good builder much longer to do it, either, I think.
