My grandfather's memorial service was over the weekend, and this was the reason i wasn't online most of the weekend. He was a veteran of the German Government from 1938-1945, serving as a Rocket Scientist for the Regime until he was picked up by U.S Forces, later working for the U.S Army/Navy under 'Operation Paperclip'. He helped design some of the first United States space exploration vehicles, including Saturn, Gemini, and Apollo. He was a member of the American Legion Stephen C. Ludlam Post 331 in Stone Harbor and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cape May. He enjoyed fishing and pinochle. He loved gabbing with people and spent a lot of time at the hospital cardiac rehab center, hospital lobby, and visiting people in the hospital. He worked at the Naval Air Development Center Johnsville, where he was the Supervising Rigger. Incase anyone wants to see it, here's a video from the service; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GyKK78N7sM&feature=plcp Auf wiedersehen, Opapa.
I’m so sorry to hear of your lose. While I have been blessed never to have lost a grandparent yet I have lost all 4 Great-grandparents that were alive when I was born. I miss them dearly and can imagine your sadness at this. I also thank your grandfather for his service to our nation; he is a hero as is all our service men and woman. -rosypolly
ill just give some quotes about it President Truman approved what was known as Operation Paperclip soon after the war, but added strict directives to ensure that the worst Nazis not be included the Americans drew up a plan to round up German scientists, giving jobs to the best and the brightest even though most of them deserved to be on trial for war crimes. American military created the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency, which was tasked with creating fake background information for brilliant scientists who were unapologetic, Dr. Strangelove-grade Nazis. With their records bleached, hundreds of Nazis were able to get past Operation Paperclip's "only good Nazis" vetting process and move to America as high level government employe0es. ike was your grandfather one of the bad ones in paperclip
