Currently, I mine with Fortune III, but I've been seeing a lot of people mining with Silk Touch, saying that it's more profitable. I'm not entirely sure how much ore blocks sell for to players, or where to sell them. Do people buy stacks of ores?

I used to only silk and sell to others but lately I have made a bigger profit doing this:
Getting about 11 stacks redstone ore, 17 of iron, 3 of gold, 2-3 diamond, 2-3 lapis. Then I throw the iron/gold into the cooking pot and sell to the server. Then I got to my town and lay down all 11 stacks of redstone ore, making a 2x2 layer of it. The I mine it all with fortune 3 and sell to the server. Next I mine all the lapis and diamonds, selling the lapis to the server and diamond to spawnshops. Then, you have around 4 sets of exp leftover, which is sold to spawnshops for 800 per set.

Plus silk touch uses less room while mining.

The inventory space is a sound arguement, but is it really time-efficient to mine all those ores twice? Why not just mine them with fort III and sell them to the server while you're mining?

It's not. My advise is to only use a silk touch pick if you have an Eff 7. Mining with fortune means you can essentially get the same amount of stuff in half the time. To solve the space issue, sell your redstone and coal and cobble while you mine.

I pefer silk touch and I do what Original_Jackson does, but another thing better about silk touch is when you mine the stone, you get stone, not cobblestone which sells for .10, which is two times more than cobble. I know it's not a huge X-factor but still notable I think.

Yeah. The difference between stone and cobble adds up fairly quickly, esp if using eff7.

Also, for me, re breaking the ores only takes about 10 minutes, and thT is worth it in my opinion. Also, I used to sell my redstone dust to someone, and recently haven't know if I was going to continue selling it, no I didn't want to sell it before I checked something.
Also, carrying two picks is a way bigger loss if I die then one.

silk touch just for easier transport and therefore potential for more ores to be collected!

I use Silk Touch and an Enderchest. This way I can get as much as possible before setting a multihome /home to go back and dump everything off.

When I don;t feel like mining or am watching tv or something, that is when I'll lay the ore out and Fortune it up.

I try not to sell to the server except when I need the money. People buy these things at crazy prices sometimes, and I like to have a stash on hand.

With that said. I may have only an EFF V pick, but (insert advertisement) I have 100,000+ in smoothstone stored in a sign so I can sell to people. (/advertisement) If I ever got an EFF VII, I think my head would explode.

Depends on what your doing. Axes doesnt really matter. Picks, fortune definately, why would you need ores? And shovel, silk touch, no one needs more flint.

Thanks to everyone for the massive amount of input. The two seem rather equal, I guess.

For the people that sell ores: Do you just sell them in the trade chat? Or are there spawnshops that buy them?

There are both. Essidi some spawn shops buy them, but you will always get people who buy them in trade chat
