Right now someone can attempt a scam and when confronted with a complaint with evidence against them, give back the money/items they attempted to scam with NO PUNISHMENT.

This is not acceptable, it encourages scamming because all you have to do is return the goods when you're caught. However, if the victim fails to collect full evidence, then you get to keep the stuff you stole!

So, if you're smart about it, you either get no punishment or you get free stuff.

My suggestion is to ban the person who attempts a scam REGARDLESS of whether or not they return the items/money scammed. After the items or money are returned, give the attempted scammer a 3 day tempban.

Maybe you could alter this by making it a long temporary ban (4 weeks or more) if they DO return the items.
If they dont return ALL of the items, then they would be banned.

I believe this is a better because at least the victim will gain some of their losses back and the scammer will not be able to play for a long time.

This guy keeps spamming in auction:
"Selling melon and dsword starting at 150k!"

    This is just wrong.

Also, someone else is scamming players out of eff. 7 picks through "ereps", but when he is reported, all he does is give it back through pm before he is ever banned.

These things need to stop. Attempted scams are just as bad as regular scams.

People can be banned for 3 days for regular scamming. 4 weeks is excessive.

Onto the suggestion, I 100% agree. What I notice about these particular instances is that when they do this once, then it tends to happen again and again in an infinite loop. The issue is what in the world drives you to think they won't do this again?

There is one particular issue that we ought to address: What is an "attempted" scam? They could just say "oh sorry forgot" and give it back. I feel like if the "accident" happens more than once than action ought to be taken.

I feel that "I'm sorry, I forgot" = ban. No excuses taken.

I will elaborate more. Everything will happen like it does now, except that instead of a mod saying "complaint locked, resolved in game", they will say "complaint locked, resolved in game, defendant temp banned 3 days.".

I agree. It's quite ridiculous that people don't get banned for this.

Tans, while I may agree with all that you say, this probably stands no chance of being accomplished.
Our staff does the very best they can, however, it is hard enough to get bans on "convicted" and proven scammers it seems.
Unfortunately for those that play nice, there will always be players that will abuse any system and figure out all the loopholes as soon as any new rule is implemented.
It is frustrating to me also seeing all the attempted scams and the players getting away with it. Especially when it is Presidents+ scamming builders or those who may not understand how to get proof.
All of us could probably do better spreading the word about scamming and how to prevent it by giving links to builders on some the fantastic threads and stickys provided on the forums.
How many times have we seen where a contract is signed - moderator has approved but always, and I mean always reminded everyone to take screen shots of the transaction - and yet still a scam occurs and not evidence is available?
How would you deal with all the cousins, brothers, sisters, friends, neighbors, mods, staff, andrew etc... that "hack my account but it will never happen again" scenarios?

    More like strict.

Your right. I changed my post. I would appreciate if you could also change your quote of me to what I changed mine to, just so we still keep the names a secret.

Harsh is a more powerful word that describes the supposed punishments well

The "my cousin downloaded the hacks so sorry omg" excuse is accepted for hacking. I highly doubt that would happen.

I support this so much its not even funny.
Sadly I see a snowballs chance in hell of it ever happening.

The Staff refrain is always to put then responsibility back on to the individual getting scammed. Not on to the scammer themselves.

Totally makes sense to me right?

"They should have collected better evidence"
"They should have investigated the person better"

    blah blah blah

I'm, in general, in favor of this. This would prevent people from people scamming like that, but could also be used against people auctioning troll-y things.

There would need to be a way to determine what is an attempted scam and what is just bad timing/circumstance (like one time I was out my eff7 for an hour because of a restart and my erepper didn't log back in right away) but all in all this could work out.
