You are obligated to follow through on your auction when you start it as it clearly states in the ECC rules found here. Additionally, anytime something like this happens, they are punished. There are no exceptions and the staff team does take action. Just because one person does it and you think he got away with it doesn't mean you should bend the rules. A supermod will be with you to make a decision. In the mean time, I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with the rules so that this kind of situation can be avoided in the future.
